Ladies into JFC Final

Louth Ladies Junior Championship Semi-Final,

Omeath Sun 6th       September

Cuchulainn Gaels 2-3 Dowdallshill 9-14

Cuchulainn Gaels and Dowdallshill clashed for the first time this season in wet and windy conditions in Omeath.  The opening exchanges saw each team evenly matched however Dowdallshill were more clinical in front of goal and dealt omeath a heavy blow with 2 early goals, the other end of the pitch saw the Omeath outfit fail to convert their chances with only a point to show for their excellent attacking play. Muddy conditions under foot didn’t help the play as many players were slipping and finding it hard to judge the bounce of the ball. Dowdallshill then found it hard to score as they resorted to taking goal chances rather then points and saw many efforts flash across the face of goal and off the posts. Dowdallshill enjoyed the majority of the possession but omeath looked dangerous every time they won the ball in midfield with their no.11 making many powerful runs in on goal. Omeath looked to be making a comeback when their no.11 scored a powerful goal but Dowdallshill reacted well and continued to put pressure on the omeath defence. Dowdallshill moved up a gear and scored another goal and two points to leave it 3-4 to 1-2 at the break. There wasn’t much separating the sides at half time but Dowdallshill started the second half brightly and were ruthless in front of goal seeing their hard work rewarded by goals. Substitutes Cathy O’ Reilly and Rene Mc Cabe made instant impact with Rene scoring one goal and a point and Cathy scoring 2 goals. Karen Wynne and Sonia Hoey continued their good form in front of goal this season with Wynne scoring four goals from full forward and Hoey scoring two goals from the 40. Omeath never gave up and continued fighting hard and scored another goal through their no.11. Dowdallshill continued to enjoy the majority of the possession throughout the second half which seemed to be the difference in the end. The game finished 9-14 to 2-3 to the ‘hill’ at the final whistle. Dowdallshill now face Termonfeckin in the final in Clan na Gael on Sunday 13th September at 12pm.

Scorers: Sonia Hoey 2-3, Karen Wynne 4-1, Sinead Mc Nally 0-3, Ciara O’ Connor 0-4, Rene Mc Cabe 1-1, Cathy O’ Reilly 2-0, Sinead Mc Gill 0,2.

Dowdallshill Team: Una Pearson, Sheila Scorr, Samantha Kelly, Aine Mc Shane, Sharon O’ Connor, Claire Mc Quillan, Orlaith O’ Hagan, Emma Singleton, Ciara O’ Connor, Sinead Mc Nally, Sonia Hoey, Emma Kellegher, Jennifer Arthur, Karen Wynne, Sinead Mc Gill. Junior FC Q-Final, Sunday 23rd August St Brigid's Park

Dowdallshill    14-4 Na Piarsaigh 0-1

Dowdallshill faced rivals Na Piarsaigh in a local Ladies Junior Championship Quarter Final derby on Sunday morning where the Dowdallers overcame their scoring problems from the previous week and saw many of there chances land in the back of the net. The first couple of minutes passed by with both sides looking evenly matched but Dowdallshill were first on the score sheet with a fine goal from Emma Kellegher. This was followed up by another two goals in quick sucession. Na Piarsaigh were gifted a chance when the Dowdallshill keeper came out to claim a ball which then bounced to the Na Piarsaigh full forward on the end line the shot was taken from an extremely tight angle and flashed by the front of the posts and left Na Piarsaigh still looking for their first score. Dowdallshill pushed on and punished once again with  two more goals. Emma Singleton having a great game at midfield can claim the assists for many of the Dowdallshill goals as her powerful 45’s were reaching the goal line for the forwards to tap in. On one of her many surging runs Emma was unlucky to see her powerful shot come back off the underside of the crossbar and Sonia Hoey reacted quickest and dived at full stretch to fist the ball over the bar for the best point of the game. At the other end of the field Na Piarsaigh began putting pressure on the Dowdallshill goal, there efforts should of been rewarded with scores but the excellent defending of the Dowdallshill full back line of Sheila Scorr and sister’s Samantha and Janine Kelly kept the rock road outfit at bay. This was a make shift full back line for Dowdallshill as Aine Mc Shane normally playing corner back injured her ankle in the previous game against the Newtown Blues and was unable to play and Sinead Mc Nally was pushed up to half back from full back. Sheila Scorr kept up her impressive form this season as she blocked a 45 and proved her ability at full back with some excellent defending. Karen Wynne looked to be enjoying her new position of full forward as she continued to rack up her scores in this years championship. At the break it was 7-2 to 0-0 to Dowdallshill. Once again Dowdallshill started the second half brightly and immediately put pressure on the Piarsaigh goal, The Na Piarsaigh Goalkeeper should be proud of her display as she pulled off many fine saves and the scoreboard did not reflect how well she played. In the opening few minutes of the half Dowdallshill brought some fresh legs on as they had excellent players on the bench to choose from. Ciara O Connor on one of her many darting runs scored a trademark goal from long range, soon after Emma Kellegher, Sonia Hoey and Sinead Mc Gill scored excellent goals. To their credit Na Piarsaigh never let their heads drop and continued to fight for every ball and put the hill defence under pressure right up to the final whistle. Emma Singleton was rewarded for her efforts with a fine point however the midfielder was extremely unlucky not to score numerous goals which would of rewarded her hard work throughout the 60mins. In the second half Emma Finnegan was moved out to half forward and with space to run had her best game of the season so far and was extremely unlucky not to score any points. Jennifer Arthur came into her own in the second half and after scoring a goal found confidence and came close on many occasions. Special mention also goes to Orlaith O’ Hagan, Sharon O’ Connor, Sinead Mc Gill, Rene Mc Cabe, Cathy, Nicole Boothman, Claire Mc Quillan for their excellent efforts throughout the game.

Dowdallshill now face Cuchulainn Gaels in the semi final on the 6th of September.

Ladies Junior championship – Preliminary round

Sunday 16th August St.Brigids Park

Dowdallshill 1-5 v Newtown Blues 1-4

The opening ten minutes of the game saw Dowdallshill putting lots of pressure on the Newtown Blues goal with the majority of the possession however Dowdallshill failed to convert their chances and saw many shots blocked or hit wide. In the opening stages the blues had a couple of chances which they also saw go wide. Both sides were finding it hard to score for much of the half but after 20minutes the blues broke the deadlock with two points leaving the scores 2 points to nil in favour of the blues at half time. Dowdallshill opened the scoring in the second half with two points the bring the scores level. Both teams exchanged points leaving it at three points each. Both teams were evenly matched throughout the game but with ten minutes left the Blues looked to have the upperhand when they scored a goal and a point. Dowdallshill now four points behind and running out of time staged a comeback when Rene Mc Cabe scored a point which was followed up by a goal from midfielder Ciara O’ Connor. The scores were now level and with less then two minutes left on the clock Dowdallshill Captain Karen Wynne scored the winning point (her second of the game). The final whistle blew to the relief of the Dowdallshill players and management which led to joyous scenes at the end of the match. Round 2

Dowdallshill 3-6 v Newtown Blues 2-7      Sunday March 29th

Dowdallshill came from behind for a hard fought victory over a very strong Newtown Blues team. The Blues started the game strongly with 2 points and a goal from play. Dowdallshill responded well with a goal from Sonia Hoey. The blues made the best of the strong breeze in the first half and scored  a well taken goal, low just inside the post and 2 then points in quick succession. The game was being played in good sport but twenty minutes into the first half a fight broke out between the Dowdallshill full back and the blues full forward which resulted in both players being sent off for the remainder of the match. Dowdallshill were feeling under pressure for much of the first half. This was eased slightly when they began to get more of the possession in the later stages of the first half, this possession paid off when Karen Wynne scored a long range point from midfield and then Aisling O’ Rourke playing at right full forward got around the defence and scored a well taken point with her favoured left foot. At half time the blues still held a considerable lead of 6 points over the hill. Dowdallshill started the second half as they ended the first, Orlaith O’ Hagan scored a fantastic point from long range that creeped just inside the post. Dowdallshill scored a couple more points and then Maired Nixon scored the best goal of the game as she hammered home a 45 taken from the ground which sped past both the full forward line and the blues goal keeper and hit the inside of the post and went in. Mairead then performed a cartwheel to celebrate in style. The blues responded well and started putting pressure on the Dowdallshill  goal, they had one shot which the keeper pushed over the bar and another shot cleared off the line by Orlaith O’ Hagan. The blues narrowed the scores but in the dying minutes of the game Amy O’ Hanlon ran in on the blues goals and hit a powerful shot which the blues keeper got her hands on but the ball powered past her into the roof of the net. Dowdallshill 4-8 v St. Kevins 2-9   Sunday March 22nd

Dowdallshill playing into the wind opened the game well with three unanswered points. Then St. Kevins responded well with a good point from play until Emma Singleton hit the back of the net with a well worked goal after linking up well with Dundalk team mate Sonia Hoey. The two teams exchanged points and then Ciara O’ Connor playing in midfield burst forward on a 40 yard run and saw her long range shot drop just below the bar for an excellent goal. Once again the two teams exchanged three points each before half time. Both teams started the second half equally well with the kevins scoring a few good frees into the strong breeze. Throughout the game Karen Wynne’s fitness showed as she went on many attacking and defending runs up and down the pitch. Once again Emma & Sonia linked up well for Sonia’s first goal, the kevin’s keeper did well to get herself in a good position but she was unlucky when the ball slipped in between her legs. Bridin Rogers did excellently in the second half sweeping up the goal keepers kick outs and starting many attacks for Dowdallshill. Even from some great defending  from the Dowdallshill back line of Sheila Scorr, Janine Kelly & Samantha Kelly (Substituted for Sinead Mc Nally) St. Kevins won a few frees which they popped over the bar to bring the scores closer. Sonia Scored again with a well taken shot off the ground. Then St. Kevins scored two well taken goals, one coming from a close range free kick that just brushed past a defenders hand and the second a powerful shot that went in just below the bar. Ladies Junior League 2008 Review

The 2008 training season for Dowdallshill Ladies got under way in February under the guidance of manager Fred O’Hagan and trainer Brendan Wynne. With numbers up at training sessions and fitness levels being improved for many weeks, it was no surprise the ladies got their league campaign off to a great start with an impressive win over Cúchulainn Gaels out in Omeath. However, the second match of the campaign against St.Fechin’s was a lot tougher and the ladies left, heads low after a game that was extremely disappointing for both players and management. There were many unfair decisions on top of the fact that the ladies just hadn’t got it together that particular morning.

The third round of the league was at home to Newtown Blues and the ladies won with an impressive display of football on show after their heavy defeat to St.Fechins a few weeks earlier. In round four, Naomh Fionbarra gave Dowdallshill Ladies their toughest match of the season and only narrowly beat them in what was a well fought match. It was many weeks later before Dowdallshill Ladies got to play the fifth round of the league against group leaders St.Vincents. Unfortunately this match ended the ladies chances of being in the league final, with St.Vincents proving to be the stronger team, particularly in the second half. Three points were handed over to Dowdallshill Ladies for the sixth and final round of the league when Glen Emmets could not field a team. The ladies finished mid-table on 9 points.
