CHAMPIONS!
Dowdallshill 1-5 Naomh Finbarra 2-7 Stabannon 23rd July 2009
Our Group 'B' campaign came to a predictable enough end at a damp Stabannon, after we succumbed to another of the teams who would have had much higher expectations at the start of the campaign, the Finbarrs.
With nothing but pride at stake, this was a typically low key encounter, and it was reflected in the performance of both teams.
We again struggled to impose ourselves on the match, and even when we were handed a 2nd half lifeline via a penalty, we were found wanting in the closing stages.
Gerry Mc Shane's 1st minute point gave us the lead for the one and only time, and over the next 26 mins, we failed to raise a white flag.
During that period, the Barrs notched-up 1-4 without reply, the goal coming from corner-forward Andy Mc Cann.
Noel Finnegan, starting on the 40, ended our long wait for a score with a free on 27 mins. The same player knocked-over another free in injury time, to leave it 1-4 to 0-3 at the break.
Finnegan added 2-more frees in the 3rd quarter to bring us to within 2 points (1-4 to 0-5), only for the Barrs to sweep down the field and score their 2nd goal through the impressive Bernard Osborne.
That put us on the back-foot again, but we were given a 2nd lifeline soon after..
After the referee changed his mind about a 'Barrs penalty by consulting his umpire, a footblock on Noel Finnegan at the other end, presented us with an opportunity to get back into the game.
Gerry Mc Shane took the kick, and although it was initially saved, Shaner followed-up to score on the rebound. That left it a 2-point match again, however it was the Toghermen who finished the match the stronger, with Bernard Osborne knocking over 3 more points in the final 3 mins, to seal the deal for his team.
And so a forgettable campaign came to an end on a losing note.
We were missing several regulars (Donie O'Callaghan, Damien Fanning, Vincy Mc Kevitt, Donal Sheridan, the suspended Ciaran Sheridan), while Paul Gill started on the bench, but was brought-on for Dermot Smith at half time. We also experimented with Gary Corrigan in the right corner of attack, with James Everard taking over in goals.

Dowdallshill 0-4 Stabannon Parnells 1-5. in Dromiskin, Sunday 5th July
Disappointing to report that our season has come to an end in the first week of July, but that's the scenario facing us, after this lacklustre match at a damp Dromiskin.
With 3 defeats from 4 matches, we're now out of the running for a knockout place, and we can have few complaints having kicked-away any chance we had of victory.
We shot 11 wides over the hour, 9 of which came in the 2nd half.
Gerry Mc Shane, who suffered a facial injury in the 2nd half before coming-back-on, kicked 2 of our 3 first half points, with Ciaran Sheridan contributing the other.
Parnells led 4-3 at the break.
The scoring rate got even worse in the 2nd half, as both teams struggled to make any real impression on the scoreboard.
Our wides tally continued to mount-up, and we paid the price when Robert Callaghan blasted an unstoppable shot past Gary Corrigan, with 2 mins of normal time left.

Dowdallshill 3-14 John Mitchells 1-7, Darver 13th June
At long last, a performance of some substance, as your Junior team notched-up their 1st win of their Group 'B' campaign with an emphatic win in Darver.
This was simply a match we had to win, and the lads stood up to the challenge, putting themselves in a winning position by half-time, helped-on by goals from Paul Gill on 6 mins, and Donal Sheridan (19). At the break, we led 2-9 to 1-2.
A 3rd goal arrived soon after the re-start from the returning Gerry Mc Shane.
The victory brings us back into contention for a knockout place, with 2 games remaining against Stabannon and the Finbarrs.
Scorers: Gerry Mc Shane 1-4, Paul Gill 1-3, Ciaran Sheridan 0-3, Donal Sheridan 1-0, Noel Mohan 0-3, Peter Hughes 0-1.

Dowdallshill 1-9 St Kevins 1-16, Fri 22nd May, Darver.
Our hopes of making the knockout stages of the JFC, suffered a huge blow, after we lost this clash in Darver.
For a good part of this match, we were still in contention, however the Kevins had more in the tank in the closing stages, and they made the most of the chances, with Liam Boylan hitting 7 points over the hour.
At the break, we only trailed by a point, 1-6 to 0-8.

Dowdallshill 0-5 St Fechins 0-12, Fri 1st May, Haggardstown
An 8 point-haul from full-forward Ronan Holdcroft, helped the Fechins to a deserved win in this opening Group 'B' clash, as our c'ship campaign got off on the worst possible footing.
For about 35 mins, we were still in the game, however we were guilty of missing several easy frees in the 1st half, which could have actually had us in-front at the break, rather than trailing 3-2.
But as the 2nd half wore-on, it was clear Fechins were gaining a strangehold, with Holdcroft proving particularly effective.
We were short on ideas, and struggled to close-down our opponents, making it all too easy for them to get scores on the board.
The first half was a disappointing affair, with Paul Gill scoring both our points from frees.
Gill contributed 2 more scores in the 2nd half, while sub Anton Rogers knocked over our other point.
Up front, we relied too heavily on Gill for scores... but our best performer was Andy Barron, who worked tirelessly for the entire 60 mins. Damien Fanning also had a good game at full-back, particularly in the 1st half.
But as a whole, we can have few complaints at the outcome.

Westerns 0-6 Dowdallshill 1-11, Reaghstown, Sat 10th October.
In our final match of the season, we managed to earn our first win of the campaign.
Despite the long grass, we played some nice passages of football, particularly in the 2nd half when we really opened-up the opposition. Donal Sheridan pulled-up injured in the very first minute, and was replaced by Noel Mohan. We led 5-4 at the break.
Dermot Smyth netted the game's only goal in the 2nd half, with the diminutive corner forward finishing with a fine personal tally of 1-4. Wing back Anton Rogers notched-up 2 great points with his left boot, and another pleasing aspect was that we had 7 different scorers.

Dowdallshill 1-7 Stabannon Parnells 1-9, St Brigid's Park Sun 23rd August
Our losing sequence in the League continued, after we suffered our 5th defeat of the campaign at the hands of Stabannon. Neither team had anything to play-for, and this was reflected in the quality of play.
We started well enough and were holding our own, however a goal from Ken Lynch in the run-in to half-time, helped turn the match in Stabannon's favour.
We never subsequently recovered, although sub Paddy Keogh took a good goal upon his introduction, and could have had another one soon after.

Dowdallshill 1-8 Lannleire 5-15, Dunleer Sun 9th August
A second half collapse of frightening proportions, saw us lose our latest League match, and at this rate, the end of the season can't come quick enough.
Although we were 4 points up at one stage in the 1st half, played most of the game with an extra man, and trailed by just a goal at the break, our 2nd half showing left alot to be desired. We were completely outrun and outscored, by a much hungrier Lannleire team, who still have a fighting chance of winning promotion.
After the match, team manager Martin Rice announced his departure from the club.

Our first team are still without a league win (walkover v Mitchells excluded), after losing to Glen Emmets by 4 points in this clash at St Brigid's Park.
Although we only trailed by a point at the break (0-5 to 0-4), Glen were much the better team in the 2nd half, and we can have few complaints about the outcome. We also had Ciaran Sheridan sent off.

Dowdallshill 1-8 Young Irelands 2-10, Sun April 26th, St Brigid's Park.
In spite of a gallant effort against our town neighbours, there were no rewards for us at the end, after Ciaran Maguire's side finished strongly to take both points, and in the process, leave us still seeking our first League win of the season.
Our players looked really fired-up for it from the very first whistle, and gave as good as they got for most of the match. We were only a point in arrears at the break, 1-3 to 0-5.. Donal Sheridan scored our 2nd half goal, while Derek Maguire accounted for all but 2 of the Irelands scores. The County panellist finished-up with 2-8. It was only in the last 5/6 mins that the Irelands pulled-clear to win.
* Play was held-up for several mins in the second half, because of a minor melee. Order was restored however, and no-one was sent-off.

Annaghminnon Rvs 0-9 Dowdallshill 0-9 Thurs 16th April Corcreaghy.
6 points from groom-to-be Gerry Mc Shane failed to prove sufficient to earn us our first league win of the season, after we were forced to settle for a draw from this Round-2 fixture at a nippy Corcreaghy.
In a match in which we never dominated, we had a couple of late chances to snatch the win, however a draw was just about a fair outcome.
Mc Shane started on the '40', while Anton Rogers was pushed into a corner forward role by manager Martin Rice.. Noel Mohan, just back from his honeymoon, started on the bench.
2 early Mc Shane scores on 8 and 9 mins gave us the early advantage, however Annaghminnon were soon in the ascendancy with a run of 7 successive scores, 4 of which came from the boot of Mark Brennan.
But in the run-in to half-time, we pulled a couple of scores-back from a Mc Shane free and a fine effort out on the left from Seamie Agnew. That left the half-time score Annaghminnon 0-7 D'hill 0-4.
Rovers pushed 8-4 clear early in the 2nd half with a point from midfielder Declan Lambe, before we enjoyed our best spell of the match.
We managed 5 points without reply with Mc Shane landing 3 frees, and Donal Sheridan and Paul Gill contributing the other 2. That served to push us into a 1-point lead with 2 mins of normal time left.
However an off the ball incident earlier in the half, meant there was still plenty of time for the tie to go either way..
We had 2 decent opportunities to put 2 points between the teams, but crucially, spurned both chances.
In the end, it was Annaghminnon's Tony Martin who had the final say, knocking over a 15 metre free to level the scores at 0-9 apiece.
This performance was very much a curate's egg, but what's certain is that there's plenty of room for improvement with the start of the c'ship just around the corner.

Dowdallshill 0-6 St Kevins 1-10 Sun April 5th St Brigid's Park
The start we were hoping-for in the League, failed to materialise, after we put in a shocking performance on our way to this 7-point defeat to the Kevins.
Having gone-in level at the break (0-5 each), our challenge petered-out badly in the 2nd half, and we managed just one further score, a Gerry Mc Shane free.
Much soul searching needed, and a vast improvement, if we're not to be consigned to the role of also-rans.

Our second team did just enough to win this tie, with both goals coming late in the game.We never trailed in the match, but by the same token, struggled to put our opponents away.2 mins from the end, we looked to have sealed the win when Chris Mc Cormack fisted Dermot Smith's centre to the net. But within minutes, Rovers were able to pull a point back, before they grabbed a disputed goal on the stroke of full-time.Luckily, Malachi Craven's full-time whistle arrived soon after.
Once again, the tactic of using Noel Mohan at full-forward and using him as chief freetaker, paid dividends.. he scored 0-4.

And it was the returning Noel Mohan who led from the front, taking over freetaking duties on his way to registering a very fine personal tally of 0-8.
Noel, only back from honeymoon last week, was literally pointing from every angle.. married life is obviously suiting then!

Dowdallshill 3-13 Cuchullain Gaels 0-2 Tues April 14th St Brigid's Park
As the scoreline suggests, it was all one-way traffic in this home fixture, as our second team dominated from start to finish. Peter Tiernan scored an exquisite goal in the 1st half, while the 2nd half 3-pointers came from a well struck Paddy Kehoe penalty, and a speculative effort from Peter Hughes. Gerry Mc Shane, who ties the knot on Friday, came off the bench to register 0-5 in a very one-sided contest.

Dowdallshill 1-5 St Kevins 1-7 Tues March 17th St Brigid's Park.
A controversial goal, 10 mins from time, proved decisive, as the Kevins condemned us to defeat, in our first 2nd Division match of the season.
The ref looked to have stopped play, only for the Kevins to put the ball in the back of the net, and in spite of our protests, the score was allowed stand. The visitors went-on to close-out the match.
The 'Hill, playing into a stiff breeze in the 1st half, failed to land a score, and trailed 5-0 at the break.
But the introduction of Gerry Mc Shane in the 2nd half, proved the catalyst for a revival, and a goal from Chris Duffy levelled up the scores. A 3rd point from Gerry Mc Shane had us in front for the first time, before the Kevins goal changed the course of the game.

John Mitchells 1-9 Dowdallshill 1-10, Sunday Feb 22nd, Bailiebailia
Our first competitive match of the new season brought-about a hard-earned win over the Mitchells, with Gerry Mc Shane landing the winning point from a free, right on the stroke of full time.
Of course the build-up to this match was overshadowed by the recent tragic loss of Enda Hughes, and it was fitting that Enda's Number 3 shirt has been retired, while a minute's silence was impeccably reserved before the throw-in.
Vincy Mc Kevitt assumed the role of full-back, while Offaly native Andy Barron came-in for his debut at left-half-forward. There was also a timely return for Peter Tiernan, who started at centrefield alongside Ciaran O'Callaghan.
In spite of undergoing just 2 training sessions under new manager Martin Rice, our lads were quickly into their stride, and within the opening 19 mins, had opened-up a double scores lead, 4-2. Then came our goal on 21 mins, when Paul Gill cut his way inside, and from an acute angle, picked-out Gerry Mc Shane, who duly finished slickly to the net. That left us 1-4 to 0-2 in front, however in the run-in to half-time, 2 Des Halpenny frees helped Mitchells reduce the arrears to 1-5 to 0-4.
We were guilty of hitting some glaring wides either side of half-time, and were punished for our inability to kill the match off, when 16 mins into the 2nd half, Mitchells stole-in for a goal of their own, to put just a single point between the teams, 1-7 to 1-6.
The teams then traded points before Mitchells got level with a Des Halpenny free (1-8 each)..
But in the closing stages, we just about managed to get the all important scores to win the game, with Gerry Mc Shane pointing on 55 and 60 mins, to see us home by the minimum.
Although it really should have been a far more comfortable victory, all credit to the lads for putting-in a trojan effort, after what has been, a most difficult 8 days.

St Fechins 0-17 Dowdallshill 0-5 Tues night Feb 24th Beaulieu
Our lads proved no match for a very fit and sprightly Fechins team, who showed the benefits of superior fitness levels, although all-round, they were well on top in all departments. Right from the first whistle, we were on the back foot, and it took us a good 10 mins before we worked the ball into the final third of the field for the first time. Once the home side started to tag-on unanswered scores, we were basically lambs to the slaughter. No positives at all to be taken from this performance, only a realisation that we have alot of work to do if we're to challenge for any of the 3 competitions in Junior this season.

Not really much need to elaborate on this scoreline. Missing a whole host of regulars for a variety of reasons, it was still a very poor performance. From the early minutes, it was obvious we were going to struggle, but the margin of defeat is still very disheartening. And what's more, we didn't exactly create many chances, even to get that elusive first score..

Dowdallshill 0-8 Glen Emmets 0-7 St Brigid's Park, Sun 8th March
Our first home match of the season brought about a welcome change in our recent fortunes, after the lads put the disappointment of heavy back to back defeats, to beat Glen Emmets by the minimum.
Leading from the front was Paul Gill, who scored all but one of our points. Gerry Mc Shane was our other scorer.
The match featured the welcome return of Eamon Duffy to defence (his first match of the season), while Vincy Mc Kevitt took-up a new role at right-corner-forward. Peter Tiernan returned to the side after injury, and lined-out alongside Andy Barron in a new centrefield pairing.

Dowdallshill 2-7 Annaghminnon Rovers 2-5, Brigids Park Sun March 15th
The lads notched-up their 3rd win of the season, but were left hanging-on in the closing stages, after the visitors cut an 11-point defecit to just 2. And in the end, we were grateful to goalkeeper John Kerr, who pulled-off a point blank save in injury time, to deny Rovers what would probably have been, the winning score.
Rovers had us on the rack in the final 8 mins, scoring a goal and 4 on the bounce, the goal coming by way of a penalty.
Earlier, we looked to be coasting towards victory, when 15 mins into the 2nd half, Donal Sheridan tapped the ball to an empty net, to give us a 2-6 to 0-1 cushion.
In the 1st half, inaccuracy was the name of the game, as Annaghminnon shot 7 wides to our 5.
It took 18 mins for the first score of the game to arrive.. a Paul Gill effort..
Rovers meanwhile, didn't raise a white flag until a minute from the end of the half.
We led 1-2 to 0-1 at the interval.
Because of a number of absentees, manager Martin Rice was again forced to re-shuffle his pack.. Eamon Duffy took-up midfield duties alongside Peter Tiernan, while David Agnew moved from defence to the '40'. And John Kerr was in for Gary Corrigan between the posts.
Scorers: Gerry Mc Shane 1-3, Paul Gill 0-2, Donal Sheridan 1-0, David Mc Crave 0-1 and Peter Tiernan 0-1.
Best: John Kerr, Damien Murphy, Damien Fanning, Peter Hughes and David Mc Crave.
