Division 3 Football League

Round-7:

Glen Emmets 0-6  Dowdallshill 0-6    Cusack Park Tullyallen Thurs July 8th

Our Div 3 title hopes remain very much alive, following this draw at a damp Cusack Park in Tullyallen.

Leading 4-2 at the break, it was a match that could have went either way in the 2nd half.

We got the last point through Noel Finnegan to force the draw.

Round-6:

Dowdallshill  0-11  Lannleire 0-7    St Brigid's Park Tues night 22nd June

Our first team bounced back from the disappointment of losing to the Fechins in the Shield semi final, when we recorded our 4th win of the campaign to keep in touch with the leaders at the top of the table..

Once again, it was Noel Finnegan who pointed the way towards victory, finishing the night with 0-5, 3 of those scores coming in the first half. As a whole though, it was a good night for our forward division, with all 6 frontmen getting on the scoresheet.

We enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the 1st half, and deservedly went-in ahead at the break 0-5 to 0-2.

2 early points from Paul Callan at the start of the 2nd half, brought Dunleer back to within a point, but crucially, they were unable to draw level. We then enjoyed our best period of the match, scoring 4 unanswered points from Noel Mohan (following a smart pass from Ciaran Sheridan into space), a Noel Finnegan free, Paul Gill and Ciaran Sheridan (after a fine through ball from Ciaran O'Callaghan).

Dunleer weren't done though, and Paul Callan's 5th point of the night kept the visitors in touch. Gary Monaghan then followed-up with another score on 23 mins, leaving the score 10-7.

We were thankful for some wayward shooting by the Dunleer forwards over the next few minutes, as they stretched our back line to the limit.

However with a minute to go, Gerry Mc Shane broke at the other end, sticking the ball over the bar for the insurance score.

Team and scorers:

                                         Fra Agnew

Damien Murphy                  Damien Fanning             Cathal Mc Shane

Seamus Agnew                   Eamon Duffy                  Anton Rogers

Noel Finnegan                      Noel Mohan                     Paul Gill

Scorers: Noel Finnegan 0-5, Paul Gill 0-2, Noel Mohan 0-1, Ciaran O'Callaghan 0-1, Gerry Mc Shane 0-1, Paul Gill 0-1.

Best players: Vincy Mc Kevitt, Ciaran Sheridan and Noel Finnegan.

Referee; Tommy Mc Enteggart.

Round-5:

St Kevins 0-9     Dowdallshill 2-9     Philipstown, Sat June 12th

Goals in either half from Ciaran Sheridan and Paul Gill, set-up this hard-earned win in Philipstown.

The home side had the better of the early exchanges and led 3-1, before Sheridan found the net midway through the 1st half to put us in front.

We went-on to lead 1-3 to 0-5 at the interval.

The second half saw a big improvement in our performance, with Paul Gill's goal on the stroke of full-time, putting the icing on the cake.

On the downside, we lost Vincy Mc Kevitt through 2 yellow cards in that 2nd half.

The management team went for some interesting positional switches.. There was a start for Brendan Maguire at wing-back, Anton Rogers dropped back to the left corner, David Agnew lined-out at centre half, with Damien Fanning starting at left-half.

Peter Hughes moved from the half forward line to centrefield, with Ciaran Sheridan coming-out from the corner to left-half forward.

Team and scorers:

                                         Gary Corrigan

Cathal Mc Shane                  Gordon Mc  Alester           Anton Rogers

Brendan Maguire                   David Agnew                    Damien Fanning

                        Peter Hughes                  Vincy Mc Kevitt

Noel Finnegan                        Gerry Mc Shane                   Ciaran Sheridan

Round-4:

Dowdallshill 2-8  St Nicholas 0-11     St Brigid's Park, Thurs night May 27th.

Our first team were forced to withstand a 2nd half fightback by the Nicks, before securing a nervous 3 point win.

Just like some of our early season matches, we played all our football in the first half of this game, but went asleep in the 2nd period, and almost paid the price.

Playing into a strong wind in the opening period, we produced some good passages of play, capped-off by some excellent scores, none moreso than our 2 goals. The first on 8 mins was a speculative effort from Ciaran Sheridan which found the top corner of the net. And the second, which arrived 3 mins from the break, was finished off by Noel Finnegan, following a deft pass from Paul Gill. However soon after that 2nd goal, which put us 2-5 to 0-6 in front, we lost Peter Hughes to a second yellow card.

That dismissal though, doesn't account for our lacklustre second half performance. With County Junior Paddy O'Boyle supplying most of their scores, the Nicks kept themselves in the hunt, and a run of 4 unanswered points in the final quarter, brought them to within a couple of points with 2 mins left. Thankfully, Noel Finnegan eased our nerves with a brilliantly judged free from an acute angle out on the right, 2 mins into stoppage time, and this score proved the final act of the game. We defended very deep in the 2nd half, inviting the Nicks onto us. Luckily, we got away with it, but it was a close run thing.

Team and scorers:

                                        Gary Corrigan

Cathal Mc Shane                  Fra Agnew                   David Agnew

Damien Murphy                   Eamon Duffy                 Anton Rogers

                     Vincent Mc Kevitt            Kevin Fitzsimons

Gerry Mc Shane                  Peter Hughes                Noel Finnegan

Noel Mohan                        Paul Gill                        Ciaran Sheridan

Subs used: Damien Fanning for Noel Mohan 32 mins, Peter Maguire for Anton Rogers 56 mins, Gordan Mc Allister for David Agnew 59 mins.

Scorers: Noel Finnegan 1-5, Ciaran Sheridan 1-0, Noel Mohan 0-1, Paul Gill 0-1, Cathal Mc Shane 0-1.

Best for the 'Hill: Vincy Mc Kevitt, Kevin Fitzsimons, Noel Finnegan.

Referee: Darren Ward.

Round-3:

St Fechins  1-11  Dowdallshill 1-8   Beauleiu, Sat night May 22nd

Our long unbeaten run, stretching back to the second game of the season, came to an end on Sat night, after we succumbed to the Fechins on their home patch in ideal playing conditions.

In truth, we were nowhere near our best, yet could well have snatched a draw with a little more luck in the closing stages.

The Fechins goal was a timely one, coming as it did just before half time. That gave them a 1-5 to 0-5 interval advantage.

Gerry Mc Shane found the back of the net in the 2nd half to give us hope, however were unable to peg back the 3 point defecit.

Team and scorers:

                                    Gary Corrigan

Cathal Mc Shane             Seamus Agnew        Fra Agnew

Damien Murphy               Eamon Duffy            Anton Rogers

                      Vincie Mc Kevitt      Kevin Fitzsimons

Ciaran Sheridan              Ciaran O'Callaghan    Gerry Mc Shane

Noel Finnegan                   Noel Mohan             Peter Hughes

Subs used: Paul Gill for Peter Hughes, David Agnew for Cathal Mc Shane, Damien Fanning for Fra Agnew and Donal Sheridan for Noel Finnegan.

Scorers: Gerry Mc Shane 1-2, Ciaran Sheridan, Kevin Fitzsimons, Vincent Mc Kevitt, Noel Finnegan, Paul Gill and Noel Mohan 0-1 each.

Referee: Michael Boyle.

Round 2:

Dowdallshill 1-13  Westerns  0-8        St Brigid's Park Thurs night 29th April

A goal and 5 points without reply in the opening quarter, set us on our way to our 2nd win of the week in the League, and our 8th consecutive victory in all competitions.

Not for the first time this season, we were fast out of the blocks, Noel Finnegan opening the scoring after 4 mins, before the same player turned supplier to set-up Noel Mohan for the games' only goal a minute later. Finnegan followed-up with another 2 points, before Vincy Mc Kevitt and Finnegan again, made it 1-5 to 0-0 with 13 mins gone.

The Westerns, who surprised Lannleire by forcing a draw at the weekend, finally got motoring with back to back points on 15 and 17 minutes, before Gary Corrigan pulled-off the first of 2 fine saves, to keep us comfortably in front.

Vincy Mc Kevitt with his 2nd point of the evening stretched our lead to 7 points on 21 mins, and 3 minutes later, Ciaran Sheridan landed the score of the game, curling a majestic point over the bar from out on the right. However with play about to resume from the kick-out, Ciaran was the subject of a cynical challenge from Trevor Baylon, the Westerns centre-half. To the amazement of those who witnessed the incident, the end product was only a yellow card.

Just before the break, the aforementioned Baylan raced forward to score only his teams' 4th point, leaving the half time score 1-7 to 0-4.

The 2nd half began just like the first, with the 'Hill dominating the early stages. The 2 Sheridan brothers notched-up back to back scores to make it 1-9 to 0-4, before the Westerns were reduced to 14 men when their wing-back recieved his marching orders.

Ciaran O'Callaghan and Ciaran Sheridan (3) completed our scoring in the 2nd half, thereby rounding-off another good night's work.

Once again, some of our teamwork was out of the top-drawer, and a number of players continue to excel. Great credit must go to manager Pat Conlon, and the way he's restored so much self belief in the team.

Best on the night were Gary Corrigan (2 excellent saves), Eamon Duffy, Peter Hughes, Ciaran and Donal Sheridan and the irrepressible Noel Finnegan.

Scorers: Ciaran Sheridan 0-5, Noel Finnegan 0-4, Noel Mohan 1-0, Vincy Mc Kevitt 0-2, Donal Sheridan 0-1, Ciaran O'Callaghan 0-1

Team:                                       Gary Corrigan

Fra Agnew                              Seamus Agnew                   David Agnew

Cathal Mc Shane                       Eamon Duffy                    Anton Rogers

                          Kevin Fitzsimons                 Vincy Mc Kevitt

Noel Finnegan                         Ciaran O'Callaghan              Donal Sheridan

Peter Hughes                           Noel Mohan                       Ciaran Sheridan

Subs used: Gerry Mc Shane for Donal Sheridan 46 mins, Damien Murphy for Anton Rogers 54 mins, Gordan Mc Allister for Fra Agnew 59 mins.

Referee: John Noonan.

Round-1:

Dowdallshill 1-9  Stabannon Parnells 0-7        In Stabannon Sunday 25th April

The winning form we've shown in the recent Kevin Mullen Shield, continued at Stabannon, after we opened our League campaign with a 5 point victory.

There was nothing fancy in the performance...we turned-in a pretty average first half display, and went-in level at the break 0-4 each. However our 2nd half effort was much more in line with the character shown in midweek against Dunleer, and a goal from Gerry Mc Shane about 10 minutes-in, proved the catalyst for our eventual victory.

Manager Pat Conlon was able to call-upon the services of Damien Murphy, Kevin Fitzsimons, Gerry Mc Shane and Ciaran Sheridan, none of whom started the Lannleire match.

Gerry Mc Shane finished top-scorer with 1-3, followed by Noel Finnegan with 0-3, and Ciaran Sheridan, Ciaran O'Callaghan and Anton Rogers with 0-1 each.

Team:                                        Gary Corrigan

Cathal Mc Shane                       Seamus Agnew                   Fra Agnew

Damien Murphy                         Eamon Duffy                      Anton Rogers

                        Kevin Fitzsimons               Vincent Mc Kevitt

Noel Finnegan                          Ciaran O'Callaghan            Donal Sheridan

Gerry Mc Shane                            Paul Gill                          Ciaran Sheridan

Subs used: Peter Hughes for Paul Gill, and Noel Mohan for Ciaran Sheridan

Referee: Joey Moynagh.

Next match: Home to the Westerns this Thurs night April 29th 7.15pm.
